Overview

Responsible for assisting in the direction of Loan activities involving the extension of installment credit to Credit Union members.  Ensures that such credit operations are in accordance with established policies, procedures, and legal requirements, and result in maximum volume, appropriate profit for the Credit Union, and a minimal delinquency ratio.  Coordinates and oversees Loan activities with both Underwriters (Buyers) and Dealers, ensuring that all subordinate areas of responsibility support the Credit Unions objectives and goals.  Trains, directs, supervises and appraises all assigned personnel.  Ensures that services are delivered professionally and efficiently, and member’s & dealership’s problems are resolved promptly.  Ensures that all processing is done in a timely manner with accuracy and in accordance with credit union policies and procedures. Willingness to assist others are vital to this position.

Responsibilities

1. Ensures the effective performance of Lending.

 

a. Ensures that lending activities are conducted in accordance with established policy guidelines and standards and are properly documented.

b. Review loan applications (both approved and denied) with Underwriters (Buyers) and discusses justification and rationale respective decisions.

c. Conduct periodic reviews of existing systems and procedures to ensure maximum efficiency and legal compliance. Provides recommendations regarding improvements in lending practices which will further the objectives of the Credit Union.

d. Handles difficult or complex problems or questions from employees and dealers.

e. Monitor underwriter loan applications to ensure decisions are in compliance with AFCU policy and procedures and also fair lending laws.

f. Follow Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), & Fair Lending policies and procedures as they relate to this position.

g. Receives and reviews loan applications. Gathers and evaluates financial and related data to establish credit worthiness.

h. Structures approvals within guidelines to enhance consumer loan portfolio and dealer relationships.

i. Answer questions from team members in a prompt and courteous manner.

j. Consults with Assistant Manager and Manger on marginal or problem loan decisions


2. Responsible for administration of Department functions.

 

a. Keeps management informed of activities, progress towards established objectives and goals, and of any significant problems.

b. Schedules department personnel and ensures adequate coverage of area functions.

c. Completes required reports and related documents promptly and accurately, and in
compliance with Credit Union guidelines and policies. Ensures maintenance of department records.

d. Ensures the effective performance of subordinate functions including, processing and evaluating loans, and handling related member service and dealer matters.

e. Attends and participates in meetings as required.

f. Ensures the availability of adequate services and materials to support department activity.

g. Ensures that security procedures are effectively implemented.


3. Effectively assists in supervising Loan personnel, ensuring optimal performance.

 

a. Provides leadership to assigned personnel through effective objective setting, delegation, and communication. Conducts staff meetings as required. Assigns, directs, and coordinates work.

b. Ensures that personnel are well-trained, effective, and optimally used and that loans are processed efficiently. Instructs personnel regarding policy, procedure, and program changes and ensures that they are well-informed regarding related legal, regulatory, and financial counseling developments.

c. Assists Certified Underwriters (Buyers) and supports personnel as needed.

d. Assists in conducting performance appraisals as required. Formulates and implements corrective actions as needed.

e. Ensures that staffing levels are appropriate and human resources are effectively utilized. Conducts interviews and assists with hiring as needed.

f. Acts as the acting manager in the absence of manager and assistant manager.

g. Monitor stats for underwriters to ensure department expectations are being met.

h. Helps coordinate and work dealership sales and ensure staffing is adequate for holidays that are required.


4. Assumes responsibility for ensuring that professional business relationships are established and maintained with dealerships, members, the community, and trade organizations.

 

a. Ensures that dealer or member requests and questions are promptly and courteously resolved.

b. Ensures that dealers and members are properly informed of Credit Union loan policies and procedures when applicable.

c. Ensures that the Credit Union's professional reputation is maintained.


5. Assumes responsibility for related duties as required or assigned.


a. Ensures that work areas are secure, safe, and well-maintained.

b. Maintains a clear understanding of all Indirect programs and keeps up to date on changes that impact our operations. Will use resources provided to review lending changes with minimal supervision from management.

c. Assists with education and promotion of the Credit Union.

d. Performs duties of Underwriters (Buyers) as necessary.

Qualifications

Training/Education/Certification:


• Preferred Bachelors degree or 2 years minimum in Credit Union lending or related field.
• Certified Underwriter Signing Authority

 

Required Knowledge:


• Thorough knowledge of Credit Union loan products and applicable policies and procedures.
• Understanding of government regulations and legal requirements involving lending and related functions.

 

Experience Required:


• Minimum of 2 years’ experience as an Underwriter
• At least four years related experience in a credit union or similar financial institution.
• Preferred 1 year of Leadership/Supervisory experience.

• Ability to operate related computer applications, calculator, fax, photocopies, and telephone.
